Men, Make Plans and Initiate!

Writer's picture: David StamationDavid Stamation

As a husband, I’ve learned that the little things matter—planning a date night, deciding on an outing, or even choosing what’s for dinner. Early in my marriage, I sometimes found myself stepping back, thinking I was being easygoing by letting my wife take the lead. But over time, I noticed something: when I wasn’t making decisions, it created tension. She didn’t want to always be the one in charge—she wanted to relax into her feminine, knowing I had things handled.

Not sure if this is you? Take the Quiz: Are You Leading the Relationship?

Notice the Yellow flags before they become Red Flags

Through experience, I’ve come to understand that initiating and making plans is a masculine trait. When a man doesn’t step up, it unintentionally shifts the dynamic, asking his partner to take on a more masculine role. While occasional role reversals are natural, if this becomes the norm, it can create frustration and block intimacy.

When a man does not set a course or make decisions, he creates a vacuum in the relationship—and his spouse will fill it. This forces her out of her natural feminine state. To repeat an important point: if she always has to initiate, she will get frustrated—and that frustration blocks intimacy and connection.

Recognizing the Pattern

Men, if you notice tension in your relationship, slow down, get quiet and centered, then ask yourself:

  • Have I taken a step back and become too comfortable letting her handle most things?

  • Am I relying on her to take the lead instead of actively participating?

If the answer is yes, chances are you've ceded your masculine core, and she has unconsciously picked up the slack. Now, she's wearing a "masculine mask" just to keep things moving. And a mask isn’t natural—for either of you.

Balance & Polarity in Relationships

We all have both masculine and feminine energies, but we tend to have a dominant core. When we suppress our authentic energy, relationships lose balance. This imbalance can lead to:

  • Too much masculine energy → Fighting, tension, competition, and resentment.

  • Too much feminine energy → Indecisiveness and lack of direction.

The Key Takeaway

As a husband, I’ve explored this topic deeply. When I actively embrace my masculine role, my relationship improves. Things just feel right—I’m not a step behind or ahead, we’re in sync.

Action Step: Lead with Intention

A man must take action.

  • I plan dinners and tell her in the morning, so she can relax into it knowing I’ve got it covered.

  • I plan shopping days, evening walks, or movie nights—choosing the film in advance.

  • I make small but intentional choices that allow her to relax into her feminine.

What NOT to Do

🚫 Don’t ask her, "What do you want to do?” If you do, she’ll shift into her masculine to decide, and you’re back at square one.

✅ Instead, observe what she enjoys and take charge.

The Stretch

Reasserting yourself in the relationship is a safe, powerful step—and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how good it feels for both of you when you do it.
